What can the library at North Hennepin Community College do for you?

How can the library here at North Hennepin assist you? The library at NHCC provides a number of services that can be of use to you.

If you're new to the college, you should know that your student ID card also serves as your library card. You'll need it to check items out, to request interlibrary loan items from other schools/libraries, and to log-in to use our online databases when you're off campus (you can also use your StarID to log-in to our databases). The 14-digit barcode number on the back of your ID is what you'll need to log-in, along with your last name. If you encounter any problems with logging-in, either on-campus or off-, you can give us a call or send us an email or stop by in person and we’ll get that fixed for you.

Books  from the library circulate for 21 days and they can be renewed twice, either in-person, over the phone, or online (just ask one of us to show you how this works). We also provide interlibrary loan service, whereby we can request items (books, articles, videos) from other colleges and libraries in the PALS system. If you'd like a quick how-to demonstration on how to place ILL requests, please stop by the library sometime.

We offer a Reserve Desk function, which allows faculty to place items on reserve for their students. These can be books, videos, class notes, etc. These items are restricted to in-library use only, generally, which means that everyone will conceivably have access to them.

Our Reference Desk is staffed regularly, between the hours of 9:00 am and 2:00 pm on weekdays. We're working at the desk so that we're directly available to assist you with research for your papers and assignments. Don't be afraid to ask for help! If someone is not available at the Reference Desk, please come and knock on our doors (Craig is in LRC 136 and Lisa is in LRC 138) or give us a call (Craig's phone is: 763-424-0733 and Lisa's is: 763-424-0738) or send us an email (at either clarson@nhcc.edu or lforslund@nhcc.edu). We also have 24 hour chat reference service available on the library's homepage.

The library has a number of areas available for quiet study, including the west end of the library, with tables and study carrels and wireless Internet access. We also have 6 quiet study rooms available for group study (meaning 2 or more students, up to a maximum of 6), 2 of which are equipped with collaboration tables that allow students to plug-in their laptops and share images with each other on a big screen television. The study rooms may also be used as video-viewing rooms if a student has missed watching a video in class or you have videos placed on reserve. The study rooms are quite popular and there is often a waiting list to use them

We are here to help make your research go as smoothly as possible, so if there is anything we can do to aid you, please let us know.

Thank you,

Craig Larson

Welcome to NHCC Library, Spring 2016

As we start the new semester, I just wanted to get the word out to everyone about the NHCC library’s services and what we can do for you. We will again be one librarian down this semester, as Lisa Forslund continues her sabbatical, but we will attempt to do our best to offer uninterrupted service.

First off, as far as circulation goes, the North Hennepin student ID card also serves as your library card. A student ID card may be obtained from the Information Desk in the ES Building. (Employee ID cards are handled through the campus security office.) This ID must be presented when checking out materials or picking up interlibrary loan items at the circulation desk. It is also this ID that students and faculty will use to log-in to our databases from off-campus (although your Star ID will also work for this).

When books are checked out, they initially circulate for a period of 21 days and they may be renewed up to two times by contacting the library, either in person, by telephone, or with an e-mail (you can also renew them yourself online—ask us to show you how!). If items checked out to students are not returned by the due date, overdue fees go into effect and a block will be placed on the student's record until the item is returned and/or the fee is paid. For more information about our circulation policies please call 763-424-0737.

The library's staff is available to assist student, staff, and community researchers with their information needs. Questions will be answered at the Reference Desk in person during business hours (see the posted schedule at the desk), or you can call us at 763-424-0733, or you can send an email. We’ve also added the AskMN service, which is a real-time chat reference service that is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The chat widget is found on the right-hand side of the library’s homepage <http://www.nhcc.edu/student-resources/library>.

The library provides interlibrary loan service to our patrons through MINITEX, the state-wide library consortium. It is our policy to provide the delivery of requested books, periodical articles, and other materials in as timely a fashion as possible. We send out requests for items the same day the request is received and notify patrons when the items have arrived. It may take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks for items to arrive, but you will be notified in a timely fashion once they do. ILL items may be picked up at the library’s circulation desk (although many article requests are now handled online and will be sent directly to your email).  Please direct requests to either Beth Finlayson (424-0935) or Craig Larson (424-0733) or contact either of us with any questions. If uncertain how to place a request, one of us can show you.

Items may be placed on reserve by faculty and these are kept at the circulation desk. Placing an item on reserve restricts its use to the library only and prevents situations where one student checks out and doesn’t return an item that everyone will need. A student ID must be presented in order to check out items from the Reserve Shelf.

We have a fairly good-sized audiovisual collection which is searchable (along with our books and other items) through the library’s website: <http://www.nhcc.edu/student-resources/library>. AV items are available for checkout, but they must be used by students in the library. We have a number of TV/VCR/DVD cart combos that can be used in the quiet areas or study rooms for students to catch up with videos they may have missed in class.

We’ve also got a fairly extensive leisure-reading collection, as well as our paperback collection, so if you’re looking for something to read just for fun, hopefully we’ve got you covered.

We’re here to make assist you in any way possible with your research needs. Let us know how we can help!

Thanks,

Craig Larson
