As we start the new semester, I just wanted to get the word out to everyone about the NHCC library’s services and what we can do for you. We will again be one librarian down this semester, as Lisa Forslund continues her sabbatical, but we will attempt to do our best to offer uninterrupted service.
First off, as far as circulation goes, the North Hennepin student ID card also serves as your library card. A student ID card may be obtained from the Information Desk in the ES Building. (Employee ID cards are handled through the campus security office.) This ID must be presented when checking out materials or picking up interlibrary loan items at the circulation desk. It is also this ID that students and faculty will use to log-in to our databases from off-campus (although your Star ID will also work for this).
When books are checked out, they initially circulate for a period of 21 days and they may be renewed up to two times by contacting the library, either in person, by telephone, or with an e-mail (you can also renew them yourself online—ask us to show you how!). If items checked out to students are not returned by the due date, overdue fees go into effect and a block will be placed on the student's record until the item is returned and/or the fee is paid. The library's staff is available to assist student, staff, and community researchers with their information needs. Questions will be answered at the Reference Desk in person during business hours (see the posted schedule at the desk), or you can call us at 763-424-0733, or you can send an email. We’ve also added the AskMN service, which is a real-time chat reference service that is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The chat widget is found on the right-hand side of the library’s homepage <http://www.nhcc.edu/student-resources/library>.
The library provides interlibrary loan service to our patrons through MINITEX, the state-wide library consortium. It is our policy to provide the delivery of requested books, periodical articles, and other materials in as timely a fashion as possible. We send out requests for items the same day the request is received and notify patrons when the items have arrived. It may take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks for items to arrive, but you will be notified in a timely fashion once they do. ILL items may be picked up at the library’s circulation desk (although many article requests are now handled online and will be sent directly to your email). Items may be placed on reserve by faculty and these are kept at the circulation desk. Placing an item on reserve restricts its use to the library only and prevents situations where one student checks out and doesn’t return an item that everyone will need. A student ID must be presented in order to check out items from the Reserve Shelf.
We have a fairly good-sized audiovisual collection which is searchable (along with our books and other items) through the library’s website: <http://www.nhcc.edu/student-resources/library>. AV items are available for checkout, but they must be used by students in the library. We have a number of TV/VCR/DVD cart combos that can be used in the quiet areas or study rooms for students to catch up with videos they may have missed in class.
We’ve also got a fairly extensive leisure-reading collection, as well as our paperback collection, so if you’re looking for something to read just for fun, hopefully we’ve got you covered.
