Public library to host nationally known Nigerian-American author

Lesley Nneka Arimah

Monday, October 2, 7:00 p.m.  FREE
Hennepin County Library Brookdale Library, 6125 Shingle Creek Pkwy, Brooklyn Center, MN 55430

Nigerian-American short fiction favorite Lesley Nneka Arimah made waves in April with the release of her long-awaited collection What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky. For months prior, publications as varied as Time, Elle, The Chicago Tribune, The Boston Globe, and even Buzzfeed had lauded it as one of 2017’s most anticipated releases – and with good reason. Arimah’s debut features a dozen stories, several of which have already earned her an international following. These include the O. Henry Prize-winning, National Magazine Award-nominated "Glory," about a doll woven from hair which comes to life, and "Light," winner of the prestigious Commonwealth Short Story Prize. Considered in its entirety, NPR calls What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky "electrifying and defiantly original… Arimah crafts stories that reward rereading, not because they're unclear or confusing, but because it's so tempting to revisit each exquisite sentence, each uniquely beautiful description."

Curious about search terms?

Curious about search terms? The graphic above shows the search terms in our EBSCO databases for the last three months. Remember to use Boolean search terms to get better results. If you need any help identifying the search terms for your topic, don't be afraid to talk to the librarians. They are here to help you and you're paying for their assistance through your tuition.

Library Open - update

The library is expected to open Tuesday typical hours. There will be parts of the library where the water is that will not be accessible. They will be mostly be near the reference desk and reference collection. You will have to walk around the yellow caution tape to access the study rooms, study carrels and books. Tutoring will be open again.  As you see in the map below, you can walk around the taped off space to get to the quiet area(although we will need to check the electricity so some of the building will be dark) and you'll be able to get to Tutoring, Math Resource Center, Writing Resource Center, College Prep and Access Services. Sorry for all the trouble!

Library Evacuation and Closure

This afternoon we had a pipe burst. You may have been here when we evacuated this library. The library is very grateful to the folks that helped cover the books. Our BIGGEST Thank you to Plant Services, Sabita and John, Public Safety, Mai and Jah, our work study students Spencer and Jared, Karen Roam through the Honors Program, Beth here at the library and Tom Lynch, Access Services.  The repair person has arrived and he'll repair the pipe and we'll have to do water clean up. I'm not exactly sure when the library will be open. I'll update you as I know more.
